Monarch Waystations in Central New York
Monarch Watch, a program sponsored by the University of Kansas, has developed a Monarch Waystation program that encourages homeowners to provide the resources monarch butterflies need. (Note: The Monarch Watch list includes non-native plants, but we know (and research shows) that native plants are even more beneficial to monarchs and other pollinators!)
Basically a Waystation is a "large enough" flower garden that:
- includes a patch of milkweeds, preferably more than one kind
- includes native nectar plants in large enough "patches"
- doesn't use pesticides or herbicides
